MagikFortune can be configured to deliver fortunes on demand, at regular intervals, or whenever you log in. The rest of the time your character will simply amuse themselves and not disturb you. If you'd rather not even see your character they will happily disappear and hide in the system tray on the bottom right of your screen, out of sight but hopefully not out of mind.
